- Installation of an isolated ceiling system that uses KSCH Ceiling Hangers requires the following materials (as specified by others and purchased separately):
-
- A. 1-1/2" x 1/2", 16-gage cold-rolled channel.
- B. 7/8" 20- to 25-gage drywall furring channel.
- C. Anchors for mounting into non-isolated ceiling substrate- OR -a. 1-5/8" Unistrut® channel (optional)
- D. 1/2" or 5/8" thick gypsum board.
- E. Appropriate tools and equipment for installation.
-
- Installation of an isolated ceiling system that uses KSCH Ceiling Hangers requires the following materials (as specified by others and purchased separately):
Please note: If shop drawings have been prepared for the installation, review drawings for completeness and accuracy; otherwise, refer to Selection Guidelines for selecting ceiling hangers.
-
- Strike grid pattern on structural deck using the following spacing criteria:
-
- A. Isolators installed at the perimeter must be located not more than 12" from the edge of the isolated ceiling; maintain at least a three-inch clearance from the perimeter. 1-1/2" x 1/2", 16-gage cold-rolled channel.
- B. Isolators may be located up to 48" along the perimeter of the isolated ceiling.
- C. Isolators mounted mid-room (i.e., those isolators not at the perimeter) may be located up to 48" on center each way (o.c.e.w).
-
- Remove KSCH Ceiling Hangers from box. Do not disassemble mounting bracket from unit for installation purposes. Confirm capacity of isolator to ensure proper location in grid (see chart). If provided, lay-out drawings will identify location of specific hangers by capacity rating. Slide cold-rolled channel through the channel carrier of the isolator or through the channel carrier of the optional APB bracket. After determining the direction the cold-roll channel will run, locate the isolators (use the alignment notches) or optional Unistrut® at the intersect points on the grid. Anchor isolators to non-isolated ceiling using appropriate fastener at minimum of two (2) locations through the mounting bracket or slide into Unistrut®. If using optional APB bracket, thread into the mounted KSCH hanger. Position the cold-rolled channel to prevent contact at partition/wall/column or any other non-isolated structural component. Inter-connect ends of cold-rolled channel using appropriate practices for ceiling grid installation.
- Strike grid pattern on structural deck using the following spacing criteria:
Capacity | Outer Spring | Inner Spring |
---|---|---|
22 | Gray | - |
35 | Blue | - |
48 | Black | - |
73 | Gray | Silver |
90 | Brown | - |
120 | Orange | - |
140 | Brown | Silver |
172 | Red | - |
223 | Red | Silver |

- Attach drywall furring channel to cold-rolled steel and interconnect the ends of the furring channel using appropriate practices for ceiling grid installation. Furring channel cannot contact non-isolated structural components. Make certain cold-rolled channel is resting on the bottom of the channel carrier bracket and not contacting the mounting bracket.
- After assembling the ceiling grid, check for levelness. Shim between the decking and mounting bracket if additional adjustment is required (this may require removal of some of the isolators). Do not bend or twist mounting bracket when shimming and leveling isolator.
- Install CPT ceiling perimeter tape at partitions/walls, columns, and around any non-isolated building components to create a 1/4" wide resilient layer that ensures the isolated ceiling remains decoupled from the non-isolated structure. As the gypsum board is attached to the grid, the springs will compress (up to 5/8") and the ceiling system will lower into final position. Position CPT to account for this change to final elevation. If an alternate method for ensuring that the isolated ceiling remains decoupled is employed (e.g., using resilient backer rod), be sure to maintain a 1/4" gap from non-isolated structural components.
- Install the gypsum board using accepted practices for attaching to the grid system. Be certain to maintain a 1/4" gap between non-isolated structural components and the isolated ceiling to ensure that the gypsum board does not contact any non-isolated structural components. Do not allow gypsum board to rest on top edge of CPT; it should abut the perimeter tape. Do not allow CPT to become compressed against the non-isolated structure. In some cases, additional adjustment of the gypsum board may be necessary to achieve levelness; consult factory for procedures.
- Caulk gap using a resilient, non-hardening caulk.

FAQ

"What is the APB for?"
APB stands for "Airspace Performance Bracket"; it is our not very subtle hint that high performance noise control is a result of an assembly, not a product. The mass of the deck, the airspace between the mass of the drywall, and the resilient decoupler (KSCH) combine for noise control. Opening up even a little more airspace beyond the 3-1/2" of the KSCH by itself can significantly increase STC and IIC ratings.
-
"What information is included in your shop drawings?"
Our shop drawings include a coordination of loading information, a dimensioned hanger layout with spring colors (capacities), acoustical information including deflection of individual hangers, as well as project specific and general installation guidelines for contractors.
-
"I need to hang mechanical under the ceiling, what should I look out for?"
Using the ceiling isolators to support equipment under the isolated has become a popular trend. The challenge with using inline spring hangers is that Kinetics needs to know within a few inches exactly where the duct, piping, lighting, or other equipment is located so we can assign loads to the correct hanger. Historically most designers only needed to give rough ideas to HVAC contractors as precision wasn't necessary. Unfortunately, this fact often leaves Kinetics having the to play the role as trade coordinator hundreds of miles away from the project. Creating BIM or AutoCAD to accurately lay out equipment ahead of time goes a long way in speeding up our shop drawing process.

- Define ceiling area being isolated and sketch a layout showing the ceiling hanger locations per the following criteria-
-
- A. Isolators installed at the perimeter must be located not more than 12" from the edge of the isolated ceiling; maintain at least a three-inch clearance from the perimeter.
- B. Isolators may be located up to 48" along the perimeter of the isolated ceiling.
- C. Isolators mounted mid-room (i.e., those isolators not at the perimeter) may be located up to 48" on center each way (o.c.e.w.).
- D. Many room configurations will require non-conventional placement of isolation hangers to support the gypsum board ceiling (i.e., every isolated ceiling cannot be laid out in even rows in each direction). Consideration must be given to supporting the gypsum board ceiling adequately; this may require unique spacing arrangements to accommodate installation of the ceiling grid.
-
- Once spacing of ceiling hangers is determined and sketched, three (3) general areas of the ceiling require load calculations: mid-room, along the perimeter, and in the corners. The total number of calculations required depends on how varied the spacing of the hangers is in each of these areas.
- Determine the total weight of the layers of gypsum wallboard and ceiling grid components being supported by the isolation hangers. The chart contains weights for materials commonly used in isolated ceiling construction:
Building Material | Weight (psf): |
---|---|
R11 (3-1/2" Fiberglass Batt) | 0.50 |
1-1/2" CRC and 7/8" Furring Channel | 0.50 |
1/2" Gypsum Board (Type X) | 1.90 |
5/8" Gypsum Board (Type X) | 2.33 |
- Additional items such as lighting fixtures or a lay-in tile ceiling may be suspended from the gypsum board/ceiling grid assembly. The weight of these items needs to be considered when determining the appropriate number/capacity of hangers required.
- Calculate load at each hanger location:
- ______lbs./hanger = Total psf of ceiling materials x SF area carried by each hanger
- Where, psf = pounds per square foot
- SF = square feet
- Select appropriate hanger for each location from chart below. Designated model numbers indicate the load at which the isolator deflects 5/8" (in addition to the 3/8" preload set at factory). Every hanger has at least a 50% overload capacity; it is possible to slightly exceed the maximum capacity shown in the chart below:
Capacity | Outer Spring | Inner Spring |
---|---|---|
22 | Gray | - |
35 | Blue | - |
48 | Black | - |
73 | Gray | Silver |
90 | Brown | - |
120 | Orange | - |
140 | Brown | Silver |
172 | Red | - |
223 | Red | Silver |

KSCH remains the most versatile spring hanger available for ceiling isolation applications. Consider this scenario: A low-profile ceiling is required only for a portion of the room – no need to use another type of spring hanger, KSCH is readily adaptable with a 3/8-inch leveling bolt and channel clip assembly. Easily suspend a ceiling at a lower elevation, create soffits, or suspend an elegant tray eiling with indirect lighting. One ceiling hanger, easily adaptable for your particular design requirements.
And this hanger is offered with two mounting plates – one plate can slide through most Unistrut® so you can span extra wide duct and properly support the ceiling grid; another, wider plate can be "shot" easily with a powder actuated fastener. That wider plate is useful whenever seismic concerns must be addressed, too. The holes in the wide mounting plate accommodate seismic-rated pins. Quick and simple to install.
There are plenty more challenges when it comes to isolating ceilings for noise control. MEP and other equipment may need to be suspended with the ceiling system, different deck elevations might be encountered, and noise control solutions sometimes need to be shimmied into tight spaces. KSCH offers unprecedented flexibility for isolated ceiling design. A single hanger design can be adapted to any isolated ceiling project, even integrated with traditional one-inch spring deflection hangers like ICC or Gotham.
- One-inch (1") deflection spring performance in a narrow 3 1/2" airspace.
- Hanger configurations easily adapt to different deck heights and ceiling design requirements.
- Two mounting brackets for fast installation either shot to the deck or slid through Unistrut®.
- Capable of accepting 3/8-inch threaded rod below the channel bracket making it easy to suspend MEP, cable trays, and similar items below the ceiling.
